Since the early 1970's, Tara Projects has been providing support
services to the production and marketing of handicrafts on Fair
Trade principles, while addressing community development needs of
economically disadvantaged crafts persons. Tara Projects funds
and maintains a number of non-formal schools and training centers
along with several adult literacy centers. They also spearhead
campaigns against child labor, illiteracy, unfair trade practices, AIDS,
and in support of women's issues.
Sushma is an artisan with Tara Projects. She is married and has two
young sons. She had to leave school early due to distance and
family illness. She found Tara Projects 5 years ago and began
working there, immediately receiving a fair wage and steady
employment. Sushma works 5-6 hours a day and supplements her
husband's income to sustain their family. She pays for her children's
school fees, food, and clothing. "I am happy that I do not have to earn
this money spending many hours in a factory. We do not have to
borrow money from the money lender. I am thankful that Tara
Projects gives us work."
